Raw Materials: Wood was the first exhibition at the Nunnery Gallery in the Raw Materials series.
The first in the series of the Raw Materials exhibitions at the Nunnery Gallery, Raw Materials: Wood explored this material’s journey from the forests of the world to the timber yards and furniture makers along east London’s riverbanks.
The exhibition showcased archival objects, including tools, printing blocks and furniture, together with photographs and magazines that revealed the lives of east London’s workforce.
Alongside the historical objects, the Raw Materials: Wood resident artist Silke Dettmers exhibited her ambitious sculpture Medium Lego. The exhibition also showcased Curious Cabinets created by Building Crafts College students, demonstrating traditional woodworking methods in contemporary craft.
Raw Materials: Wood would not have been possible without the work and research of the project’s community steering group and the generous grant support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Foundation for Future London.
